MATERIALSWhat materials do you use for your paintings?I use all professional artist grade materials.
For the watercolors, I typically use Windsor Newton or Daniel Smith watercolor paints and Arches brand 140 lb. watercolor paper. All of the paints have an ASTM lightfastness rating of very good to excellent. The paper is machine molded paper, is made of 100% cotton and is acid-free.
My drawings are done on a variety of acid-free papers using either graphite or compressed charcoal.
What materials do you use for matting and framing? All of the drawings and paintings are single or double matted with Crescent or Bainbridge matboard. These are quality matboards that have an acid-free core and backing paper. The top of the painting or drawing is attached to the back of the mat using an archival quality gummed paper hinging tape. Attaching it in this matter allows for the natural shrinking and expansion of the paper that occur with changes in temperature and humidity. The adhesive on the tape is acid-free and water activated. The artwork is backed by acid-free foam board or acid-free paper and sealed to keep any dust out. All framed pieces come ready to hang.
PROPER CAREHow should I care for my framed artwork? With proper care, your purchase can last a lifetime. Paintings and drawings should not be hung in areas of high humidity like a bathroom. They also should be hung away from direct sunlight or harsh artificial lights.
How should I care for my unframed artwork?Be careful not to touch the surface of unframed artwork since drawings could be smudged or the oils in your skin could leave a permanent mark.
Unframed pieces come single or double matted with Crescent or Bainbridge matboard. The artwork is backed by acid-free foam board and packed in a clear, sealed bag for protection.
Typically, the artwork is matted to fit a standard sized frame to make framing easier and less costly. Whether you frame it yourself or elect to have it professionally framed, please be sure to frame the artwork behind glass and use all acid-free materials. When hanging your art, follow the instructions listed in "Caring for my framed artwork".
